Are You Using the Correct Type of Oil?

Did you know that not all motor oil is created equally? You may know that there are different types of motor oil used in vehicles, but not know the differences, or what will happen if you use the wrong type. Here is what you need to know.

Take care with DIY oil changes

If you plan to change your oil yourself, which is not recommended on European models, you need to make sure that you’re using the right type. If you don’t, your engine will not operate at peak performance, and you could cause lasting damage to your vehicle. If you don’t know for sure what type of oil to use, talk to your mechanic.

Topping off the oil

If you seem to have burned a little bit of oil, it might not mean that you need a major repair or even an oil change. Topping off the oil with a quart or so isn’t going to harm your vehicle—unless you use the wrong oil. Before adding any oil to the engine’s reservoir, check online for the right weight and type of oil.

The difference between different types of oil

There are some big differences between different types of oil used in import cars. Most of these vehicles will be using a synthetic oil that offers higher performance and lower maintenance costs overall. The biggest difference in different types and weights of oil lies in thickness and the lowest temperature in which the oil can adequately perform.
